Optical uniformity of large-size quartz glass in my country has achieved a qualitative leap

In the first quarter of 2015, China Building Materials Science Research Institute successfully developed large-size quartz glass products with a diameter of more than 600 mm and an optical uniformity of 2.1×10-6, filling the domestic gap, marking that my country's large-size quartz glass optical uniformity has successfully entered the "2.0" era, laying a technical foundation for the independent development of larger-size high-uniformity quartz glass products.

Optical uniformity refers to the degree of uneven refractive index inside the material. If the optical is uneven, a phase difference will occur after the light passes through the medium, which may cause the optical system to fail to achieve the expected function or even fail to work normally. As a necessary lens material for various high-precision optical systems, the optical uniformity of fused quartz glass directly affects the imaging quality of the optical system. Since the Ninth Five-Year Plan, China Building Materials Research Institute has been committed to the research of new processes, technologies, new equipment and related basic theories for high-uniform quartz glass. During the Tenth Five-Year Plan, it pioneered the chemical vapor deposition process in China, making it possible to manufacture large-size, high-uniform quartz glass; during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, it achieved an optical uniformity of 3×10-6 for a 300 mm diameter aperture and mass production; through the Twelfth Five-Year Plan, the optical uniformity has achieved a qualitative leap from 3×10-6 to 2×10-6, forming a complete set of technologies and equipment with fully independent intellectual property rights. In 2014, it won the second prize in the science and technology invention category of the building materials industry, driving the progress of the industry, and related products are used in high-precision mapping camera systems and other high-tech fields.
